At last – a step forward over HGVs in Clare

After much campaigning  there at last has been some progress on tackling HGVs in Clare!

I got the issue onto the agenda of a high level meeting with senior highways officers, Cllr Graham Newman, the Portfolio holders for Roads and Transport and myself at which we agreed

  • SCC  will undertake a study looking at the costings and logistics of whether a full origin and destination survey can be conducted on HGVs coming through Clare.

  • SCC will approach the developers/promoters of the Maple Hill wind turbine to check that they are satisfied about the suitability of the proposed route for the turbine construction traffic.

  • SCC will amend its lorry rote map, initially online, to show bordering counties and to show that towns and villages such as Clare, Lavenham and Coddenham that are difficult for HGV

  • Highways officers will draw up plans to discuss with Clare Town Council for measures to mitigate the impact of HGVs through the town such as installing different drain covers to reduce vibration and noise.

I am pleased we have taken these steps but will continue  to work with Clare Town Council and the Stour Valley Lorry Action Group for a permanent solution to the problem
