SCHOOL’S OUT … LET’S PLAY!

The design consultants for the new Thurlow playground just couldn’t wait to try it out

A community-wide project to refurbish the playground, led by a committee formed from members of Gt & Lt Thurlow Parish Councils, Thurlow Sports Club and parents from within the two villages has been delivered on time, to budget in just over 15 months with the official opening at the Recreation Ground on Tuesday 21st July in time for the school holidays

A business plan was compiled for the project to replace play equipment that was 25 years old and no longer fit for purpose and involved input from children of the village primary school in conjunction with Action Play & Leisure based in Norfolk who installed this new fantastic community asset

I had the honour of performing the ribbon cutting ceremony – and had to step swiftly aside once the gate was open so the children could get down to the serious business of play.

I gave  £2,000 from my Locality Budget which we used to lever a further  £8,000 from Suffolk C.C Empowering Communities Fund

In addition the project also received funding from SEBC Rural Initiatives Grant Scheme, Big Lottery Awards for All, Suffolk Foundation and also Havebury Housing Partnership who contributed towards the very popular zip wire

The village community also got behind the project with its own fundraising efforts from Thurlow Fayre, Village Bonfire Night, Quiz Night, Xmas Raffles, Song Request Night at Thurlow Cock, Gardening Club Summer BBQ as well as donations from both Gt & Lt Thurlow Parish Council’s, Thurlow Estate and Thurlow Garage

Allan Loveday who managed the project said that his fellow committee members are delighted at how well the new play equipment has been received and are very grateful to the residents of Thurlow and also to all the funders for their support.
